The History of Freemasonry in China Hong Kong and the Far East
THE CRAFT IN THE EAST

Book cover of 'The Craft in the East'

The Craft in the East is the definitive history of Freemasonry in China, Hong Kong and the Far East. A copy should be in every Freemason's library.

Author: R.W. Bro. Christopher Haffner

Price:    HKD100 (USD13)

About the author:
Bro. Christopher 'Kit' Haffner was the District Assistant Grand Secretary of Hong Kong and the Far East when he wrote the first edition of this book in 1977, and had not long left the chair of the Corinthian Lodge of Amoy, his mother lodge. He progressed that year to President of the District Board of Benevolence and in 1982 to Deputy District Grand Master. In 1984, following the death of R.W.Bro. R.C. Lee, he was patented by H.R.H. The Duke of Kent as District Grand Master, and invested by Lord Cornwallis the following spring. Research into Masonic history played a prominent role in Bro. Haffner's life. He was one of thirty full members of the premier lodge of research, the Quatuor Coronati Lodge No 2076 of London. He also received several American Masonic awards.

A Review of the First Edition:
'Bro. Haffner has undoubtedly compiled the most important book on Freemasonry in the East since the Second World War and this is the firm conclusion of many 'Old China Hands' to whom I have spoken. Undoubtedly the inclusion of an extensive index adds considerably to this excellent work. Where else have we previously been able to read under one cover such gems as the part that Hong Kong lodges played in the early days of the Correspondence Circle, providing in 1887 two out of the first fifty-three joining lodges, or the uncompleted story of a Scottish lodge in Yokohama resisting for twenty years the sale of their Hall by the English District Grand Lodge in Hong Kong? These cameos are the lifeblood of history. Bro. Haffner confesses to not being a historian but he has achieved an undeniable triumph. I know that as a result of this publication he has created much worldwide interest. This is the spirit which will eventually lead to the publication of a definitive history of masonry in the East, but until then this book is a must.'

Bro. T.W. Fripp in Ars Quatuor Coronatorum Vol. 90 for 1977
